In October, my family faces homelessness, unless we can make it to Minnesota by early August. We have 80 days left until August 1.
I was recently accepted into a pre-nursing program in Bloomington, MN, and for the first time in years, I have a real path forward; for me, my wife of nine years, my elderly mother, and our cats. But getting there is the obstacle standing between us and safety.
Our situation in Alabama has been dangerous from the start. Before we even moved into our current home, our landlord physically assaulted me. We stayed because we had no other options. Since then, he has cut off contact entirely and neglected the property for over a year. On top of that, Alabama has become increasingly hostile for my wife and me as an openly queer, gender-nonconforming couple. I've lost jobs because of it.
Now, our landlord is forcing us out by October. If we can't move, we have nowhere to go.
Getting accepted to school was supposed to be the turning point. It still can be, but only if we can afford to get there. The funds raised will go toward a moving truck or pod, housing deposits, gas, food, and lodging for the drive north. We're using savings and remaining FAFSA funds, but it's not enough.
Every dollar gets us closer to a front door that's actually ours.
If you can contribute, share, or connect us with Minnesota/Twin Cities resources, please reach out. Thank you for being part of this.
Goal updates with new donations. Our cost breakdown is as follows:
$1,500: Covers the drive itself: two nights of lodging, gas for our car, and food for the ~1,150-mile trip from Montgomery to Minneapolis
$3,000: Adds a moving truck or POD so we can actually bring our belongings with us. This is the minimum for a real move
$5,000: This covers travel, moving, and deposits (first + last month) on an apartment or house in Minneapolis
$9,000: Professional movers so my elderly mom doesn't have to endure a physically grueling move, plus deposits, travel, and a small buffer for anything unexpected
