I’m reaching out because my family in Jamaica has been hit incredibly hard by Hurricane Melissa, and I really need help supporting them through this crisis. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, the strongest hurricane ever recorded to hit the island. It passed almost directly over Montego Bay, where my family lives, and the damage has been devastating.

My sister’s home had the doors ripped off and the inside of her house flooded. All of her belongings were either water damaged, destroyed, or blown away. Her fridge and stove are ruined, her bed had to be thrown out, and most of her clothes and small items are gone. The roads near her home washed away, so she’s been walking three hours just to check on her house.

Separately, my family has been navigating another really heavy situation. My dad passed away last week due to months of health complications from a car accident earlier this year. He suffered a stroke and was moved into a nursing facility shortly before the storm. Because the hurricane knocked out power and damaged infrastructure, we couldn’t get updates on him. When we were finally able to get through, we learned that his condition had worsened, and he passed a few days later.

I now need to travel to Jamaica for the funeral, cover the cost of missing work, and bring supplies from the US since resources are limited right now. This has all been a lot to carry at once, and I hate asking for money, but I simply don’t have enough to cover everything and help my family.

I’m raising funds to help:

- Repair my sister’s home, including replacing the doors and fixing storm damage

- Replace the belongings that were lost or destroyed

- Purchase a new fridge and stove

- Cover travel and funeral costs, including taking time off work

- Bring supplies from the US that aren’t easily accessible right now

I’m hoping to raise $5,000 to help cover all of these expenses. Every donation, no matter the amount, will directly support my family as we try to rebuild and recover from both the storm and the loss of my father.
