My dad has been homeless for nearly 15 years, working wherever and whenever he can find work. Despite his efforts, he hasn’t been able to get out of his situation on his own, especially as he’s battled addiction for many years. His health is rapidly deteriorating, and he’s desperate to get into an inpatient rehab facility close to where I live. I want to help him in any way I can, but I’m also struggling financially while raising a small toddler. My mother was able to come stay with me, and together we got her clean and sober—she’s almost a year into her recovery. I know it’s possible for my dad, too, but I just can’t afford the gas money to go get him in Woodland, CA, and bring him to my house. He would be staying in my garage temporarily while we work to establish his Medicaid and get him into rehab. He won’t be able to bring anything with him for fear of bringing bed bugs, so I’ll need to get him clothes, hygiene products, and food until his welfare application is approved. I just need a little help from anyone willing and able—I can’t do this by myself.
He never used to be this way. My dad had a home, a job, and was happy. Years ago, my little brother drowned in Lake Del Valle, and before that, both my grandparents passed away. My dad began to spiral after these tragedies, not knowing how to cope, and it wasn’t long before he lost everything. The fact that he wants and aspires to have a better life for himself, so he can be there for me and his grandkids, tells me that change is possible and that he’s willing to put in the work to achieve it. I believe with a little support, he can turn his life around. Thank you so much for reading and for any help you can give—your kindness means more than you know.
