My father is my best friend and has always been there for me, no matter what. Now, he needs help more than ever. A few months ago, he suffered a major ischemic stroke that left him 85% paralyzed on his left side. After spending three weeks in the hospital and then moving to a sub-acute rehab facility, he faced even more challenges. On his tenth day in rehab, he was rushed to another hospital due to a new clot, which caused aphasia. Upon arrival, doctors discovered he had fractured and collapsed bones in his upper back that required surgery, as well as an abscess that needed immediate attention, wound care, and two weeks of IV antibiotics to treat sepsis.

All of these emergencies have resulted in overwhelming medical bills, including six separate transportation charges that insurance did not fully cover. My dad now faces several huge out-of-pocket deductibles or everything—from hospital stays and surgeries to medications and rehabilitation. He is on a limited monthly income, and we are struggling to keep up with the costs so he doesn't get sent to collections. On top of that, he needs more rehabilitation and therapy than his insurance will provide, so it's up to us to make sure he regains his mobility and independence. I have moved in with him, along with my one-year-old daughter and twelve-year-old son, to be his main caregiver. I can't leave him alone, and I also need help from a caregiver or sitter once or twice a week so I can attend my own doctor appointments or go to the store.
