Why Do We Need Your Help

Hi my name is Denisse. My dad, Luis, is currently sick and my family and I are asking for your help towards paying medical bills that will ensure that he gets better from a brain bacterial infection, caused by Listeria, that he is currently suffering from. He has been hospitalized here in Ecuador since June 5th and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit since June 16th. He was found unable to breathe properly because other than the brain bacterial infection that he was going through, he was also dealing with a Staph Infection in his lungs. On top of those, the ICU doctors recently told us that he is combating Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which is when there are too many acids in the blood caused by a lack of insulin. He needs a lot of care to combat all of these issues, and my dad does not have health insurance. Between his first hospitalization and his time in the ICU, the medical bill costs are going up to $60,000 (and getting higher every day he is in the ICU) that we unfortunately cannot afford. My mom’s income, our family’s main support, has been put in standby since she has to take care of my dad.

How His Illness Started

Around March my dad was saying that he was feeling dizzy, as if at any given moment he would collapse while walking. He also began having double vision where in order to see correctly he felt the need to close one of his eyes. He was hiding out in his home, rarely going out. He did all types of testing in order to see what exactly he was going through and every doctor said that he appeared fine and healthy. Then, doctors began saying that he suffered from a Transient Ischemic Attack. After hearing from my dad that his ability to walk was worsening, my mom immediately traveled to Ecuador from New York.

The Deterioration

My mom and dad tried consulting every doctor and clinic available to get different opinions on what was going on. The costs of all these consultations and for the medicine that every doctor prescribed have been adding up, especially since my dad unfortunately does not have insurance here in Ecuador. My dad’s ability to walk turned from somewhat being able to pick up and bend his knees while walking to dragging his feet in a sort of waddle-like walk. Along with that, his voice has also begun having a lower pitch and tone. It was becoming a struggle for him to speak, so when he did it was in a rushed and whispered manner. All of these symptoms adding up made my mom make the decision to bring my dad to a hospital where he would be treated by a neurologist here in Ecuador.

What Illness Does Luis Have

After doing brain imaging back in May, in June, the neurologist requested another MRI that this time had contrast. Through this he was able to see that my dad was suffering from inflammation of the basal ganglia within the brain. Following, the neurologist requested a lumbar puncture, which finally showed that my dad’s infection was caused by a bacteria called Listeria Monocytogenes. This, along with the staph infection in his lungs, and the diabetic ketoacidosis in his blood have left him on a ventilator as they try to give his body a chance to fight off these infections.

Hola, mi nombre es Denisse. Mi papá, Luis, está enfermo. Mi familia y yo estamos pidiendo su ayuda para pagar las facturas médicas que asegurará que mi papá mejore de una infección bacteriana cerebral que padece actualmente. Ha estado hospitalizado aquí en Ecuador desde el 5 de junio y fue colocado en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos desde el 16 de junio. Se descubrió que no podía respirar correctamente porque, además de la infección bacteriana cerebral por la que estaba pasando, también estaba lidiando con una infección por estafilococos en los pulmones. Cómo Comenzó su Enfermedad

Alrededor de marzo mi papá decía que se sentía mareado, como si en cualquier momento se iba a desplomar al caminar. También comenzó a tener visión doble donde para poder ver correctamente sintió la necesidad de cerrar uno de sus ojos. Estaba escondido en su casa, rara vez salía. Hizo todo tipo de pruebas para ver exactamente por lo que estaba pasando y todos los médicos dijeron que parecía estar bien y saludable. Luego, los médicos comenzaron a decir que padecía un ataque isquémico transitorio. Después de escuchar de mi papá que su capacidad para caminar estaba empeorando, mi mamá viajó inmediatamente a Ecuador desde Nueva York.

La Deterioración

Mi mamá y mi papá trataron de consultar a todos los médicos y clínicas disponibles para obtener diferentes opiniones sobre lo que estaba pasando. Los costos de todas estas consultas y de los medicamentos que cada médico recetaba se han ido acumulando, sobre todo porque mi papá lamentablemente no tiene seguro aquí en Ecuador. La capacidad de mi padre para caminar pasó de ser capaz de levantarse y doblar las rodillas mientras caminaba a arrastrar los pies en una especie de andar de pato. Junto con eso, su voz también comenzó a tener un tono más bajo. Se estaba convirtiendo en una lucha para él hablar, así que cuando lo hacía era de una manera apresurada y susurrada. Todos estos síntomas sumados hicieron que mi mamá tomara la decisión de llevar a mi papá a un hospital donde lo trataría un neurólogo aquí en Ecuador.

Que Enfermedad tiene Luis

Después de hacer imágenes cerebrales en mayo, en junio, el neurólogo solicitó otra resonancia magnética que esta vez tenía contraste. A través de esto, pudo ver que mi padre sufría de una inflamación de los ganglios basales dentro del cerebro. Posteriormente, el neurólogo solicitó una punción lumbar, que finalmente mostró que la infección de mi papá era causada por una bacteria llamada Listeria Monocytogenes. Esto, junto con la infección por estafilococos en sus pulmones y la cetoacidosis diabética en su sangre lo han dejado conectado a un ventilador mientras intentan darle a su cuerpo la oportunidad de combatir estas infecciones.
