For as long as I can remember, my dad, Eleuterio, has dreamed of setting sail across the ocean. An adventurer at heart, he has spent years planning an incredible journey: sailing from Mexico to Australia, navigating open waters, and embracing the freedom of the sea.
But life has thrown him a challenge—one that we need your help to overcome.
The Challenge: A Knee Replacement to Keep the Dream Alive
After years of wear and tear, my dad’s knee has deteriorated to the point where walking, let alone sailing, has become painful and difficult. He needs a knee replacement to regain his mobility and strength. Without this surgery, his lifelong dream of sailing will remain just that—a dream.
We’re asking for your help to make his journey possible. The medical costs in Mexico are significantly lower than in many other countries, but the total cost—including surgery, rehabilitation, and recovery—is still a major financial burden.
The Goal
Our fundraising goal is $380,000 MXN ($17,000USD or $29,704 AUD), covering:
- Studies (X rays, etc) - 15,000MXN
- Knee replacement - 80,000MXN
- Surgeon - 50,000MXN
- Anesthetician - 8,000MXN
- Two nights hospital stay - 18,000MXN
- Operating room - 20,000MXN

With your support, we can get my dad the treatment he needs, so he can get back on his feet—both on land and at sea.
The Dream: Sailing from Mexico to Australia
This surgery is more than just about health; it’s about giving my dad the chance to live his dream. This is the plan:
Stage 1: The Surgery
First things first - to get my dad his new knee. This stage will take about four months from the moment we lock in the surgery to when he's fully recovered.
Stage 2: Training
The next stage is for him to get a second medical assessment to make sure he's fit enough to hop back into a boat. If he is, the plan is for him to get back into training and acquire any necessary certifications to get back into sailing. This stage should take one to two months.
Stage 3: Resourcing
The final stage is to find the means to get there (aka - finding a boat). This could look like acquiring a second-hand sailboat or crewing someone else's. We're open to different options and suggestions. Once the final itinerary is confirmed, this stage also involves getting any visas and other travel documents he'd need for his trip.
Stage 4: Off he goes!
The dream is to sail from Mexico to Australia. You can have a look at his fully fleshed out itinerary here (heads up - it's in Spanish). As you can see in the flowchart above though, there are many contention plans, so we will adjust and adapt the itinerary according to my dad's capacity and needs.
How You Can Help
Every donation, big or small, brings us one step closer to making this happen. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this campaign with your friends and family.
(*If you want to donate in MXN, get in touch with me - we also have a Mexican bank account you can donate to).
Let’s get my dad back on his feet and onto the deck of a sailboat, chasing the horizon.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
