My dad is a hard working single father of four who means the world to us. For 14 years, he put his family first, quitting drinking to raise us on his own. When the pandemic hit and we all started our own families, he thought it was okay to relax a little and have a drink with friends. After the lockdown, those drinks became more frequent, but he didn’t realize how quickly things could change. When he recognized he had a problem, he quit drinking again—this time for good.
Five months into his sobriety, he started getting sick. In October, he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. His health has declined rapidly, and now, with eight months sober, he’s been told he needs a liver transplant to survive. I am his oldest daughter, and I moved back home to care for him. I’m juggling being a single mother to a toddler, working full time, and making sure my dad isn’t alone through this fight.
The costs are overwhelming. I live two hours away from the hospital with traffic, and I’ve had to miss work to be by his side. My toddler has been staying with friends and family for weeks at a time, and after the transplant, I’ll need to travel back and forth twice a week for his care. The funds raised will help with living expenses, babysitters, travel for treatment, and may even help me move closer to the hospital for a couple of months.
Thank you to everyone for the support and for sharing this link. Our lives have been turned upside down—please stand with me and show my dad we are here to fight with him.
