Help My Dad Get a Folding Power Wheelchair Before Major Surgery

Hi friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,

I'm reaching out during a very challenging time in my life. My dad and our family are currently preparing for major surgery November 4th, and in order for him to recover safely and maintain some level of independence, he urgently need a lightweight folding power wheelchair: something we currently cannot afford on our own.

He recently has been diagnosed with a Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, and as such, requires surgery. Without it, he has about a year to live. Thankfully, the VA will cover the surgery, but when it comes to costs involved in his recovery, there is little to no assistance. We have attempted several times to fight for more assistance from the VA, but we are running out of time.

My dad was a firefighter within the military for over twenty years, during which, many roofs and walls fell on him as he fought fires and saved lives. The accumulated damage from these repeated calls did permanent damage to his back, giving him limited mobility. As such, he primarily uses a manual wheelchair to get around.

However, due to his current condition and how his limited mobility will affect this condition, this wheelchair isn’t just a convenience; it’s a necessity.

After surgery, my dad won’t be able to use his arms for mobility, since this is a chest surgery which will require them to basically wire his ribcage shut after operating on the aneurysm. Due to this location, he will be unable to move his arms much; he essentially will only be able to move him arms like a T-rex while recovering.

Because of this, a folding power wheelchair is necessary. This will allow him to get to medical appointments, manage basic daily needs, and maintain some freedom during recovery.

The ability to fold and transport it easily is especially important for getting to and from hospital visits, rehab, and follow-up care.

Unfortunately, the VA wont replace his defective power assist despite it having been recalled and having caused him physical injury.

We simply cannot afford this kind of medical equipment alone.

I'm asking for your help to raise 2,500 to purchase a safe, reliable, and lightweight folding power wheelchair that fits his needs.
