Help My Dad With His Emergency Housing Situation

My name is Amber-Lee, and I am attempting to raise money on behalf of my father, John. Those of you that know me know I would NEVER usually ask for financial assistance, but at this point, I am desperate. I have been going back and forth for a long time now, even making this GoFundMe page. It is beyond embarrassing, and I have been overly concerned about how this would come across to most, but I will put my ego aside to try to help my father. I HATE asking for help, but I honestly don't know what else to do.

 

I want to give you all a back story to the situation. My father went into cancer remission in 2010, but it has since returned. Along with his cancer diagnosis, his back issues forced him to go out on permanent disability, and he has been out of work since. Additionally, my father suffers from major depressive disorder and anxiety, which has aided in this horrible situation and has led to a further downward spiral. Tasks that we can do without assistance are near impossible for him for all these reasons.

 

My father's current living situation is very bleak. My mother has left, leaving him with only half of the monthly income that he was usually used to. The situation has led to me taking care of many financial issues, which has put me in quite a bit of debt. My main concern is his housing situation. The house is falling apart. The back wall of the house is twisting from the recent snowstorm, and the ceiling drywall in one of the bedrooms has collapsed due to water damage. I am very concerned about the house continuing to fall apart and I want to get him out of there as soon as possible. The vehicle he has does not work. He does not even have a working refrigerator. I have been sending food to the house every day I am working. I bring food to him on my days off and even after work. As you can imagine, this has become SUPER expensive.

 

I have reached out to numerous programs for help, but getting assistance is not that simple. From what I am told, apartment complexes in the area only take a limited number of people with HUD. Meals on wheels would be a good alternative for food assistance; however, he does not have a place to store it. I have been working with a social worker, but it's not moving as fast as it needs to. As you can also imagine, my father is concerned about where he would end up, as am I.

 

I have been trying to figure out ways to assist him from getting out of my vehicle lease, working extra hours, etc. On top of all of this, I am attempting to finish my first and only degree. My father is struggling, which has also put a lot of pressure on me. I would love to do everything I can for the guy that has always been my rock. I am trying to raise money to find him a safer place to live in. This Gofundme will assist him with a security deposit and first/second month's rent or attempt to pay off some of my debts, allowing me to save a down payment to purchase a safer house where he can live with essential appliances. Not only will this relieve a massive amount of stress, but it will also give us a space where I can spend time with him. I miss being able to go over and hang out. I haven't been able to do so for quite some time.

 

I am not trying to make this sound like a sob story, but I am at a loss. The stress of the whole situation has come down on both our shoulders, and I feel incredibly helpless.

 

My father means absolutely everything to me. I would give this man the world if I could.

 

To all our friends and family, please do not directly contact my dad about his living situation. That will stress him out and I want to prevent that as much as possible.
