Help My Cousin George Recover After a Devastating Accident
I’m Dan Serban, George’s cousin, and I’m writing this because George and his family were in the hospital for 5 days and we need to help. On Monday, June 22, George was riding his scooter on South Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West when a driver cut him off without warning. He hit the brakes hard, flew off the scooter, and landed on the pavement, arms first, then his face. I can barely write that without remembering the feeling of horror after I just heard about the accident and after the first time I saw him.
The injuries were catastrophic. Both of his arms were shattered. His jaw was broken. His face fractured in multiple places. His nose busted open in at least 3 places and missing teeth. The paramedics who arrived on scene made the call quickly, his injuries were too severe for local care. George was airlifted directly from Key West to Jackson South Miami Trauma Center, where a team of trauma surgeons was ready for him. Tuesday night, he went into a seven-hour surgery to start rebuilding his arms. He had another surgery Thursday to repair his face for about 5 hours. His mouth is wired shut and won't be able to eat any solid foods or talk for at least two weeks.
Monica, his wife, has barely left his side. That’s just who she is and honestly, that’s who they are together. George is the kind of guy who shows up for everyone. He and Monica have built a beautiful life together with their son John, and watching them go through this has been gutting.
The financial weight of this is real—the ambulance, the airlift, the surgeries, the trauma center, the recovery ahead, that’s going to be at least three months, we all know how costly the medical bills are. It’s a lot for any family to face, especially when you can’t think about anything except whether your husband, your dad, is going to be okay. If you can give, please give. If you can’t, please share. And if you know George, you already know why so many people are showing up for him right now. He would do it for any of us without a second thought.
