Help My Brother-In-Law Raise Money for Treatment

Last year, my brother-in-law, Lucas, was unfortunately diagnosed incorrectly as a Type 2 diabetic instead of the rare Type 1.5 that he is. This resulted in improper treatment that sent his body into ketoacidosis, which is very painful and potentially life-threatening. Because Lucas was so newly diagnosed as a diabetic, he wasn’t able to recognize the signs of ketoacidosis, so it went on for many days longer than it should have until he was admitted into ICU.

Although they were able to save his life, it caused severe nerve damage throughout his body. He now lives in nerve pain (sharp, shooting, burning, shocking, pins & needles) from the top of his head to the soles of his feet. He was diagnosed with extremely rare Small Cell Autonomic & Peripheral Neuropathy. The pain kept spreading throughout his body and increasing in intensity to the point that he was unable to eat for two weeks, and he could barely take sips of water for several days. He began coughing and spitting up blood for a few days, so his primary doctor put him on hospice.

Obviously his condition had become quite serious, and he was not expected to live much longer. It was only by a miracle that his body started to crave a little bit of food and water after not eating for such a long time. He was put on Morphine, Dilaudid, and Lorazepam to help control the pain, and he will continue to be on these medications long term as he tries to regain some quality of life.

 

Since his pain is due to nerve damage throughout his body, he is immobilized, barely able to walk, and generally confined to his bed. While the medications do help to make his pain more manageable, they do not treat or cure his disease. The only treatment that has been shown to be able to repair or regenerate nerves is Stem Cell Therapy, which is very expensive. The Stem Cell treatments that have had the best success are not in the United States, so it makes it even more expensive.

Lucas was called by God to be a missionary, so we believe this health crisis is a planned attack by Satan to get him off course from serving God on a foreign mission field.
