Please help me to help my brother.
My brother Genadiy Maystrenko was badly burned in a domestic fire accident on Sunday night in his house in the Ukraine. He has mild intellectual impairment, and he and his wife are both deaf. Nobody heard his cries for help as he burned. His two young sons aged 7 and 9 arrived home from visiting Grand Aunty a couple streets away, to find him unconscious with severe burns to 50% of his body. From the waist down, his clothes and skin were burned away, including his shoes. An ambulance was called and he was taken to a general hospital in the nearest town. He was not sent to a burns unit because he had failed to sign up for a new system “Domestic Doctor.” Due to his disabilities he was not even aware of it. He was left unattended in the general hospital ward for 24hours. Ukrainian hospitals are “free”, however the medical supplies within them are not. Patients must provide their own funding for treatment. Someone from our village took some money to the hospital so he could be transferred to the burns unit. By that time, his kidneys started to fail. He had surgery to address the kidney problems, and his burns were wrapped in pig skin. He is now semi-conscious in intensive care, facing a long and uncertain road to recovery. We have very little family in the Ukraine who can help. My mother and I have sent as much money as we could, however it is only enough for one week’s worth of hospital care. Hopefully some of his close friends will give money. Our only other hope is to spread the word among our Australian friends for help. Please give what you can… every dollar will make a difference. If you can’t give, please share this so it reaches as many people as possible. Thank you so much, Liliya, Lyuba, and Anastaciya.
