Help My Brother Fight Liver and Kidney Failure While Supporting My Mom

In February, my brother (Zach Thaxton) was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis) and chronic kidney disease, conditions that have devastated his health and our family. The diagnosis was a shock, made even more complex by the discovery of the MTHFR gene mutation, a rare genetic disorder that has likely accelerated his decline. While alcohol may have played a role, it is this gene mutation that has primarily led to his current critical condition.

For the past four years, my brother has been living with our mom, Cheryl Thaxton, unable to work due to a variety of challenges. He has exhausted all his savings and retirement, leaving our mom to bear the full weight of his care. She’s been his unwavering support system, driving him to countless doctor appointments, preparing meals tailored to his needs, and taking on the role of a full-time nurse. All of this has been done on her limited social security income, and she is now struggling to cover both the day-to-day expenses and the mounting medical bills.

This GoFundMe is not just about covering the medical costs. It’s about ensuring that my mom, who has given up so much to care for her son, has the support she needs to keep going. She hasn't had time to prepare for the upcoming winter or even handle basic home maintenance because every moment has been dedicated to my brother’s care.

Despite the gravity of his situation, my brother’s spirit remains strong. He has bravely shared his journey on social media, shedding light on the realities of living with such severe health conditions. He recently posted a health update expressing how your love, prayers, and well-wishes have brought him hope and some improvement. But the battle is far from over. He is still facing weekly procedures, the possibility of a liver and kidney transplant, and the daily challenges of living with his conditions.

In addition to the medical and daily living expenses, we are hoping to raise enough funds to move my mom and brother out of the mountain cabin they currently live in and into safer, more accessible housing in the Denver metro area. Or at least get them to hotels when winter storms are on their way. Last winter, they were stranded due to severe weather, a situation that could be life-threatening given my brother’s fragile health. Being closer to his medical team and emergency services is critical, especially as we head into another winter.
