Help my best friends husband adjust to life with vision loss

Donation protected
Hi everyone,
My name is Courtney, and I’m starting this GoFundMe on behalf of my best friend Tara and her husband, Jarame.

Over the past couple months, Jarame has been facing a sudden and devastating health issue that has completely changed the course of their lives. It began when he lost peripheral vision in his left eye, which doctors believed was the result of an eye stroke caused by sleep apnea. Just weeks ago, the same thing happened in his right eye — and things have quickly gone downhill from there.

Since late June, they’ve been through a whirlwind of hospital stays, specialists, and nonstop testing — MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds, bloodwork, and more. While the doctors have ruled out a long list of serious conditions, they still don’t have a clear diagnosis. Right now, they’re leaning toward a rare condition called NAION, but because Jarame is only 47 and in good health otherwise, his case doesn’t fully fit the mold.

What they do know is heartbreaking: the vision loss he’s experienced is permanent. He has lost all peripheral vision and about 25% of the bottom field in both eyes. The vision that remains is extremely distorted and grainy. The doctors' current focus is preserving what little vision he has left.

Because of this, Jarame can no longer drive or work. The VA has been wonderful and has connected him with a vision loss care team to help adjust their home and daily life. But there are many expenses and challenges ahead that the VA doesn’t cover, and that’s where I’m hoping our community can step in.

Funds raised will go directly toward:

1. Accessibility tools and modifications to help Jarame live as independently as possible

2. Assistive technology or adaptive devices not covered by VA benefits

3. Out-of-pocket medical expenses

4. Lost income as they transition to a single-income household

If you know Tara and Jarame, you know how hard they work and how much they give to others. Jarame is not one to ever ask for help — but right now, they need us.

Please consider donating if you’re able, and if you can’t, a share, a prayer, or a kind word means just as much. Every bit of support will help lighten the load as they navigate this incredibly difficult and uncertain time.

With love and gratitude,
Courtney
