My name is Adriana, and I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for help for my 10-year-old Dachshund, Cody. I’ve had him since he was just 2 months old, and he has been my constant companion ever since. For nearly his entire life, he has been a happy, healthy little guy who brought so much joy into my world.

On November 1st, everything changed. I rushed him to the emergency veterinarian after he suddenly became unable to move without crying out in pain. He was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition that commonly affects Dachshunds. IVDD occurs when the cushioning discs between the bones of the spine deteriorate or rupture, placing pressure on the spinal cord and causing severe pain, nerve damage, and even paralysis.

Since that day, he has been on strict crate rest and taking Carprofen (an anti-inflammatory) and Gabapentin (for pain) for over six weeks. Despite doing everything possible to help him heal, his condition has recently worsened.

This past weekend, he lost feeling in his back legs and can no longer stand on his own without significant discomfort. He is now unable to go to the bathroom without assistance. Watching him struggle like this has been heartbreaking.

Unfortunately, the next step for his recovery would be surgery. Before surgery can even take place, he would need an MRI, which alone costs around $4,000, followed by surgery estimated between $9,500 and $10,000. As much as I wish I could, I simply cannot afford these costs on my own.

I am currently studying to become a nurse while also working full-time. I have been doing everything in my power to care for him, give him comfort, and give him a chance at recovery. Asking for help does not come easily, but this has become my last option.
