Hi There!
Hello Friends, Family & Community,
My Aunt Donna Pearson was (and hopefully will be again) a vibrant 60 year old who had a granddaughter in January and a grandson in August, dances all night at weddings, worked the COVID clinics as a MA (Medical Assistant) giving shots in the early stages of the pandemic, works in the imaging department at her local hospital, loved to travel with her daughters and sisters, and is just a very kind and gracious friend, neightbor, co-worker, and family member. In May 2022, Donna was diagnosed with a large benign brain tumor behind her right ear inside her skull. It was so large that it atually pushed her brain over to the left side of her head as it continued growing, It was found by accident during an eye exam when it was recommended that she get an MRI because the issue she was beginning to have, (slight double vision, dizziness, and imbalance), didn't have anything to do with her eyes. Donna met with an excellent Neurosurgeon in Denver, Colorado who said the tumor was probably growing for many years but is so large now that it needs to be removed sooner than later. Since Donna wasn't having many symptoms that you would expect with a tumor as large as hers was, the doctor felt she would do well and require very little, if any, rehabilitation. Well, the morning after surgery, although her MRI didn't show any signs of a stroke, Donna woke up with many disabilities. She cannot use her right eye so there is tape over her glasses otherwise she sees double, the right side of her face is numb, she couldn’t swallow in the early days of recover, she has lost hearing in her right ear and it will not return, she cannot use her right hand (her dominant side), her speech is impaired and she is using a wheelchair now because she cannot walk well using her walker. Donna is now home from the rehabilitation facility in Denver and is still needing several hours of Physical and Occupational Therapy to try to gain her stamina and strength . Donna's intention was to return to work within 4-6 weeks but her road to recovery is going to take much long now. The doctors think 6-12 months, which has devastated her. She is very worried about her finances at this point because she only has one income, unfortunately she lost her husband, my Uncle Stan, suddenly and unexpectedly one year ago this month from a blood clot in his lung following pelvic surgery. She doesn't have short term disability, her long term disability doesn't kick in until 12 weeks and Social Security disability doesn't kick in until January of 2023, if she is approved. Unfortunately her husband did not have life insurance or a pension so she is struggling month to month to pay her bills and hopefully keep her home where she raised her three daughters. She hasn't even begun to think about her medical bills which are piling up.
She also has two dogs at home that need care, along with all of her monthly bills & she is wanting to receive acupuncture regularly to help her rehabilitation. I wish i was closer to help her but she lives in Colorado. I flew out there a few weeks ago to visit her & after talking to her realized she could really use lots of support, especially some financial support.
