Help Ms. Rachel Beat Cancer
Donation protected
Thank you for supporting our Ms. Rachel in her fight against breast cancer.
Rachel Hughes is 33 years old and has worked as part of the administrative team at Children's Discovery for the past two years. She was originally born in Rochester, NY but grew up in West Palm Beach, FL. Rachel worked in the healthcare field for 10 years before switching to early childhood development and childcare. She moved to Charleston in August 2018 and has been an irreplaceable and integral part of the Children's Discovery Center team since beginning at our school.
Parents love seeing Rachel's friendly smile every morning at drop-off and are also amazed to regularly see her filling in for teachers in literally every classroom, answering the phone to answer questions for parents, planning student parent events and doing anything to help our school run smoothly.
Rachel was recently diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. This is a form of breast cancer or carcinoma that happens when abnormal cells growing in the lining of the milk ducts change and invade breast tissue beyond the walls of the duct. Without prompt treatment, invasive ductal carcinoma can spread to lymph nodes or blood vessels and metastasize (spread) throughout the body.
Rachel has a very long road ahead of her and starts 22 weeks of chemotherapy April 10th. In addition to medical care costs, she will take a leave of absence during this time and has to prepare for regular monthly expenses while trying to pay for her cancer treatments.
Katie Carter (executive director of CDC), Megan Miehe (parent, and breast cancer survivor) and myself knew we wanted to help in whatever capacity possible and I know the community of Children's Discovery Center feels the same. Please give whatever you are able to, remembering that no contribution is too small. If you aren't able to donate, Rachel could use prayer, meals, positive words of encouragement and any support you are able to provider. A cancer diagnosis is challenging mentally, physically, and financially but we hope the assistance and love of our community will help Rachel to navigate the months ahead and lead to a positive outcome.
