Help Mrs. Smith (Karla) due to medical expenses

My name is Karla Smith. I have been working in education since 2008. On March 4, 2023, I contracted meningitis and suffered a small stroke. I was in the ICU and hospital for a month and have been in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy for the past year. The stroke left me with cognitive deficits and brain damage and the therapy is helping me to recover and increase my executive functioning so I can participate in life again. My progress is slow but steady!

Trying to recover from the meningitis and along with suffering from chronic migraines, it has left my family with significant medical debt. We have reached out to the medical providers to decrease our debt as well as applied for medical assistance and disability. Disability was denied, and while we are appealing the decision, that could take another 6 months, during which bills will continue to accumulate.
