Help Mr. J's Students Step Fresh into Middle School

Hi! My name is Jaron, and I am a dedicated 4th-grade teacher based in Harlem, NY. At the school where I teach 100% of our students are minority students/students of color, 92% are economically disadvantaged, and 13% are experiencing homelessness or are residing in homeless shelters. Regardless of their background or history — my students hold a special place in my heart, and as they prepare to transition to middle school, I want to celebrate their exceptional achievements in a meaningful way.

I taught these kids during their 3rd grade year and moved up with them to 4th grade & over the past two years, these remarkable children have not only taught me valuable lessons but have also demonstrated unwavering determination and strength.

After this current school year, 5th grade will be now moved to our middle school, meaning that my current 4th graders will be middle schoolers next year. Not only was it my goal to prepare them academically and emotionally for everything Middle School — I want them to step into that building with confidence and pride.

Our school is organizing a Sneaker Ball Celebration in lieu of a moving up ceremony, and I'm spearheading an initiative to provide sneakers for each student in the 4th grade. After discussing with my students we agreed that Nike Air Force 1s would be the shoe that we feel best in & they also suggested that we customize each pair to go with whatever outfit they decided to wear (lol).

Though to some this may seem like an inexpensive venture, it is important to highlight that financial barriers may prevent some families from being able to provide NEW sneakers for their children. These kids deserve to feel as good, just as much as they do good. No student or family should have to worry about spending money (they may not have) on sneakers for the Sneaker Ball. That's why I'm reaching out for support.
