Help Save Mr. Grey

For over 10 years, I’ve been caring for a sweet stray cat named Mr. Grey. He showed up outside my home more than a decade ago, and since then, he’s become like one of my own. Even though he lived outdoors (I run a dog boarding & grooming business and have two cat-aggressive dogs), I’ve fed him, watched over him, and loved him every single day.

When the weather turned cold, Grey always had a warm place in our heated 3-car garage, curled up on his couch or bed. Over the years, he’s become my shadow: greeting me in the driveway by hopping on my car for attention, following me on mile-long walks around the neighborhood, & even keeping me company during long grooming shifts (he loved watching the dogs!). Through life’s ups and downs, he’s always been there with unconditional love.

Recently, Mr. Grey became very sick. He was rushed to the emergency hospital & diagnosed with severe kidney failure, a UTI, anemia, constipation, back pain, ear irritation, & gingivitis. He is also FIV positive, making him more vulnerable to infections. The vets warned me that his body was shutting down and that I might have to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go. He had lost a tremendous amount of weight and stopped eating altogether, not even touching his favorite foods or treats.

Every vet I spoke with told me that they weren’t hopeful & that he was lethargic, not eating, and his values were only slightly decreasing with treatment, and nowhere near where they should be.

Today, we almost put him down. But then something incredible happened: after a visit from my brother-in-law, Grey perked up, rubbed against him, purred, & for the first time in days, finally ate a little food. He’s fighting. He’s showing us he still wants to be here.

Right now, Grey is hospitalized on IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, appetite stimulants, pain meds, antibiotics, and close monitoring. His bills are already over $6,000, and if he continues to rally, he will need lifelong care: prescription kidney food, medications, regular bloodwork, fluids at home, and a comfortable, safe space where he can live out whatever time he has left. There is no cure, but with help, we can give him more time, comfort, and love.

I never expected a stray cat to capture my heart like this, but after more than a decade of caring for him, he’s family. I want to give him the chance he’s clearly asking for: to live out his days in peace, surrounded by love.
