Help Mr. Beans Have A Good Quality Of Life

If you have met Mr. Beans you know he is the sweetest, snuggliest, funniest,  most precious thing to roam the earth (although I may be a bit biased).

Unfortunately with this adorable breed comes some complications with the length of their back which can result in a disease commonly referred to as IVDD (Intervertebral disk disease). It's not likely there is something we could have done to prevent this from happening. They extrude their disks because they are Chondrodystrophic not because of lack of care or irresponsibility with the breed. Chondrodystophy is disk extrusion and is the consequence of early changes in the structure of growth plates. The jelly-like filling inside his vertebrae used to absorb shock to a dogs flexible spine hardens and can create discomfort, pain and in the worst cases paralyzation.

I noticed a couple of months ago he seemed to be uncomfortable and I took him to the vet. They found the issue was located in his lumbar and gave him some steroids and pain meds and sent him on his way. I'd notice discomfort every now and again and gave him some pain meds and had him take it easy and usually it was a quick turn around. This time around the first day he was fine, and we did our usual song and dance of laying low and managing the discomfort. By day four I knew this time around was a little different from the rest. He winced at even the slightest touch and his hind legs were slow to respond. His confident prance turned into an uncomfortable looking waddle. It was seriously the worst few days watching this dog that is usually so full of life visibly suffering and not knowing if it was an uphill battle or if it was just a few bad days we had to ride out.

I was very hesitant to reach out for help because I am very much a do-it-myself kind of girl, but the expenses are beyond me. The sooner we can have the surgery the better his chances of a full recovery. I want my sweet lovable three year old puppy to be able to run and play and do all of the things he loves. The alternative is aggressive pain meds and steroids to  manage the pain, but will compromise his quality of life. If it worsens and he is paralyzed and or suffering the ethical thing to do would be to put him down. I refuse to have that be an option and I will do anything in my power to give him the greatest chance at a long and healthy life.

The MRI and Ct scans alone will cost up to $4,000 with the surgery being up to $13,000. The prices are dependent on how much it has progressed, location of the injury and how long he needs to stay at the aftercare facility. The hopes are that he has a successful surgery and that we can do all the things necessary to get him back to his usual youthful and vibrant self. If we make anything more than the final costs I will redistribute the funds to other dogs who are in need of help.

This dog is my whole heart and soul. He has saved me in more ways than I thought could be possible from a furry four legged friend and it's my turn to return the favor. Really any contributions at all towards Mr. Beans would be greatly appreciated. You can follow @beansthewein on Instagram, I will be posting updates on their about his progression.
