*So, I'm sorry if this is long, but if you're a dog/pet lover, then you'll understand*
Hello, everyone, this is Erik & Samantha Anderson - we just celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary on April 9th and are happily married! So, to get started, I have a little backstory...
In 2018 my wife and I bought our first house together and before even moving in, we talked about having our own dog together and the search began soon after. So, in June of 2018, we applied for adoption forms and went to Animal House Shelter in Huntley, IL. to find our doggo! After nearly 5 hours of playing with dogs and not finding any that could meet our personalities, we saw one dog that was being walked by a volunteer around the yard we were in. My wife instantly said that she wanted to see that dog and ran over to the volunteer before she brought the dog back inside. Upon bringing the dog over to me, we just knew that she was the one, literally love at first sight. After choosing Moxie, while my wife was up at the counter, and filling out paperwork and paying, she sat in-between my legs and nestled close to me as if I was "dad". After having a 14-year-old Golden Retriever as a kid and seeing him love my father so much, I finally knew what it was like for a dog to look up to me as if I was "safe", and that "I" would take care of her. That I was "dad".
For reference, this is what Moxie looked like when we rescued her that day. She was malnourished, skinny, exhausted, and terrified. So, after adopting Moxie, this is what we learned..........

After a few months, we had a dog trainer come over to help us understand her a bit more. Upon further inspection, we were told some grim details about her past. So, Moxie has had her teeth filed down by human hands so she could be used as a breeding dog and not bite the male who was "with her" during those times. Additionally, her front lower canines have been fractured off and her top two are nearly all but worn down as well. And the topper what we just found out today, Moxie has a BB in her chest - someone shot her at some point in time before we got her. She also has numerous scars all around her body and before being rescued by Animal House Shelter, she was at a kill shelter infected with heart-worms.
But, this is why I am here...
When we first got her, Moxie had an enlarged mammary gland and it's only gotten bigger. Because of this, I obviously brought it to the attention of our first vet who said it was essentially "nothing" and that it was because of trauma to the breast from her puppies. However, after a few visits, I didn't feel that comfortable with the vet and we went to another vet. So again, I brought this up to our new vet and it wasn't an area/cause of concern until Moxie's last wellness check-up, where it became "a problem".
Now, after a month of waiting, Moxie finally got to see the specialist, today (04/15/21). We were told that she needed an ultrasound, chest x-rays, alongside her mammary gland removal of both her lingual/rear glands, as well as pain medication, a stay overnight, and a biopsy test for cancer.
So, my wife and I decided to go along with the procedure as Moxie is only 6 years old and that she has plenty of years left, let alone not including how much of a badass she is from surviving life on the street (literally), surviving a BB in the chest, surviving hear-worms, and now these tumors. We owe it to her to help her out, but we understand there could be other outcomes as well.
The point is, we love our girl, and any help is appreciated. I don't want to beg for contributions, but it helps, it really does. Regardless, I thank you for reading this and "our" story.
Our total cost is $3,784.50 and constitutes the lowest end amount.
Lastly, check out a few more of these photos of Moxie to see how different she is now, 3 years after having her...
