Mutual Aid Ask for safe housing after mold exposure
Myself and my housemates — three māhū in our 20ʻs in school, healthcare, and public media — were impacted by the recent flooding.
Due to the neglegence of the landlord and property manager — we have been living in a home that does not pass safety requirements. This led to the flooding of my bedroom, exposing mold under the floors, walls, ceiling, and sink.
In addition to us losing wages from missed work to address the damage done to our belongings, I have not received my disability income or EBT. Further, a member of our household is healing from multiple injuries and on temporary disability pay, only receiving half of the average amount of their income.
The (foreign) landlord knew the possible dangers posed by the instability of the house and leased it to us with full intention to demo in a year giving no regard to our safety, nor informing us of this plan. hewa. The damages are irrepairable, and are exposing us to hazardous molds. The landlord is still asking for $2,500 on April 1.
While we decide whether or not to move forward legally to hold the landlord accountable, we need to find temporary or permanent housing as soon as possible to reduce additional exposure to unsafe molds and unstable flooring.
