My name is Stephanie Connors Rivera, and I wish this was my story to tell because it is a great one.
Over the last few months, I have gotten to hear and see with my own eyes the many wonderful animals at Mountain Misfits Animal Sanctuary in Little Valley, New York.
Their mission is to provide lifelong refuge, care, and advocacy for animals in need.
Solely owned and operated by two military veterans, who most recently moved into a house located on the sanctuary premises, they have committed themselves to maintaining both a healthy and safe atmosphere for the good of the animals.
In the almost 3 years of their own financial standing, making sacrifices solely for the rescue, Mountain Misfits has managed to save 12 pot-bellied and mini pigs from terrible, unfortunate circumstances and have brought them all to rehabilitation with gentle hands and the provided structure and safety.
They have also taken in other animals, including a 22-year-old autism-certified pony named Whisper who loves children, and most recently, ducklings!
While living directly on the sanctuary property has its benefits, the owners have had to undergo costs to rehabilitate and upkeep the building - drywalling, cabinets, stair maintenance, and most recently, septic tank maintenance and repair.
The sanctuary has had additional setbacks these last few months, from ditch drainage/erosion problems due to recent flooding on the property, to juggling medical/surgical expenses from spaying/neutering procedures.
All of these setbacks have brought immediate delays to the many initiatives that they would like to accomplish this year:
- Rebuild the farmhouse to allow room for new pig rescues
- Convert the garage area into a pig/intake room for future residents and/or mishaps on the farm
- Purchase a water pump and additional flooring for the sanctuary property being rehabilitated
- Pay off vet bills accrued for some of the animals that needed immediate care
- Purchase extra hay/food supplies to prepare for the brisk winter season
