Late 2024 Morpheus was diagnosed with Kidney Disease and Hyperthyroidism.
On December 12th 2025, Morpheus stopped eating.
On December 14th, he stopped drinking. He seemed confused, started hiding in cupboards, and acting oddly.
On December 15th, at the Vets office, a difficult discussion about how to proceed followed, whether to try to bring him back from the brink or proceed with euthanasia. He'd lost a pound since his annual vet visit just 4 weeks earlier.
Our biggest concern being his comfort and quality of life. We wanted Morpheus to have the chance to recover, and he proceeded to receive subcutaneous fluids, anti nausea medication, and a hunger stimulant. We were shown how to inject his fluids, and his new medications.
The following days were challenging and full of tears. Monday and Tuesday passed; he'd ask for food, and go to the water bowl, but he wouldn't eat or drink. Each time he asked and wouldn't eat a new round of tears ensued. He slept all day by the heater, his body exhausted.
On Tuesday night, I thought for sure he wasn't going to live to see morning. I stayed up all night with him, and held him as we stared into each others eyes. Morning came, and by some miracle, he drank and ate.
It was touch and go, but he continued to eat and drink. Within a week he gained back half a pound.
Now, January 14th, a month after this all began, Morpheus is doing very well. He's back to his energetic self, running around and playing with his 5 kitty companions, eating heartily, and enjoying life.
While his Kidney disease is incurable, we're thrilled his quality of life can be so good with the proper care.
Every day he needs:
- A morning and evening dose of his Hyperthyroidism medication
- A dose of anti nausea medication
- His dermal hunger stimulant
Every 48 hours he needs:
- A subcutaneous fluids injection
And ongoing:
- Vet visits and blood work
He's also transitioned to eating wet food for ease on his kidneys, almost exclusively, bringing his food to $12/day.
His care now is just under $1000/month to keep him feeling healthy, and ensuring a great quality of life for him.
We want him to have the best end of life care, so he can enjoy all the time he has left with us.
Help our beloved Morpheus feel good and enjoy his time left.
