Our dear friend and relative, Moroy (Jonas Escalante Ezpeleta), is a proud Filipino seafarer and the family's sole breadwinner. His wife, Dimple, and two children are his greatest treasures – the sole reason he sacrifices being separated from his family during his deployment. Being a seafarer is challenging, yet because of this, he established a small grocery store (sari-sari store). His goal was to have a small business to support their everyday expenses. This all changed in August. We were devastated to hear that Moroy had been diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma, the most advanced, aggressive, and deadly type of brain cancer. He had immediate brain surgery, which drained their hard-earned savings. On his follow-up appointment this past September 14, 2023, a stat CT scan of the brain was done as he was experiencing some weakness and loss of balance. The family received further bad news as the results showed a new and larger brain tumor. He was advised to go through chemotherapy, radiation, and, again, surgery.
