I was riding my electric scooter home after school when I was suddenly hit by a Tesla. The accident left me with a shattered elbow, and I’ve been in a lot of pain ever since. On top of that, my brand new custom bat glasses were broken, and I missed out on going to Journey’s last concert with my mom—something I had been looking forward to for a long time. Because of my injuries, I’ve missed a lot of work, and things have been especially hard since I don’t have insurance. I’m only 18, just moved out, and am living independently with my boyfriend, so covering these unexpected expenses is overwhelming.

Now, I’m facing my first orthopedic doctor appointment, and I’m worried about how I’ll manage the costs of ongoing treatment and possible surgery to remove the shattered bone. I’m also anxious about what my graduation will look like with my arm in a cast, and I’ve had to give up on going to prom. All of this has taken a toll on my hope and plans for the future.
