**Update 12/14 @8pm - We got to visit with Moose today at the hospital. He was very happy to see us! His tail was wagging nonstop with the cutest little whines. We immediately had to put the cone of shame on him to prevent him from chewing on his IV, and then he took the cutest little nap in our arms. He wasn't interested in eating food, which is a little worrying, but might just be from all of the stress. We are hoping his kidney levels either stay the same or improve for a *hopeful* discharge tomorrow. The ICU vet also just called and said he ate a little bit and was acting more like a typical puppy tonight by moving around his cage, jumping, and probably just being a little ball of chaos (which we love to hear). I just wanted to update everyone, and say how incredibly BLESSED and THANKFUL we are to each and everyone who donated, shared, and sent us thoughtful messages. Most of you are friends that we are so lucky to have by our side. THANK YOU for everything so far, and I hope to post a better update in the coming days.
Moose is our 13-week-old dachshund puppy, and he has already brought so much love and joy into our lives since we picked him up on December 6th. He is a sweet, playful little guy who quickly became a cherished member of our family. Just a few days after bringing him home, Moose started showing signs that something was wrong—he stopped playing, lost his appetite, and began vomiting. We rushed him to the vet, where initial tests ruled out parvo and other common diseases. However, further bloodwork revealed that Moose was suffering from a severe acute liver injury, possibly from an ingested toxin or a congenital issue. We immediately took him to an Internal Medicine veterinarian, and he has been hospitalized since December 11th. While he is slowly recovering, Moose has experienced some setbacks that have required additional hospitalization and continuous care. We have done everything possible to search for a cause, tearing apart our house for items with xylitol, checking our yard for mushrooms, sago palms, rat poison, or herbicides, but we have found nothing at this point. I work from home, and Moose is always either in a crate or a playpen when I can't have eyes on him. Unfortunately, with toxic ingestion, it is often impossible to know exactly what happened or when. It is even possible that Moose was exposed to something before we brought him home. We have paid for all of Moose's medical care so far using CareCredit and our own funds, but the costs are adding up quickly. We are now facing ongoing expenses for continued hospitalization, follow-up care, medications, and any additional treatments he will need IF he is able to come home soon. We started pet insurance the day we got him, but there is a 14-day waiting period before we can file any claims, so this is considered a "pre-existing condition" and we are unable to file for reimbursement so we have paid for the treatment ourselves upfront. Moose means the world to us, and we are doing everything we can to give him the best possible chance at a full recovery. If you feel led to give, please know we are so grateful. We are prepared to give this boy a chance at a happy life, but we also feel that it is time to ask for help (as hard as it is to do). Your support would mean everything to us and to Moose as he continues his fight to get better.
