Yesterday should have been an ordinary day.

Moose and I were coming back from our morning walk. Right as we were about to enter the elevator, Moose found a rock covered in god-knows-what nastiness only dogs find appetizing…as well as shards of glass. Before I could intervene, he decided to eat said nastiness, pieces of glass falling from his mouth as he chewed and then swallowed.

Within minutes, we were rushing to the emergency vet, terrified of what he had consumed. Our worst fear was confirmed: Moose had ingested something large, presumably glass, and an endoscopy wasn’t going to cut it. He needed immediate emergency surgery.

Luckily, it ended up being a large rock and he spit out the glass before consuming that part. Thank god. But details like that don’t show up on an x ray or ultrasound, so we were tasked with intervening with the information we had at the time…and that intervention was stupid expensive.

If you know Moose, you know he’s the kind of dog who believes every person he meets is his best friend. The kind who insists on greeting you like you’re the most important person in the world, jumps and kisses and all. He’s an extroverted sausage boi of pure love — happiest in a room full of people, soaking up every ounce of affection (and food) he can find.

He has brought so much joy, laughter, and comfort to so many people in his life and right now, he could use a bit of that love in return.

Asking for help like this feels incredibly vulnerable and awkward. I honestly hate it. But emergency surgery (particularly in Denver) is overwhelming financially, and I unfortunately don’t have pet insurance.
