Help Moose Heal After Hit and Run That Took His Sisters Life
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Legacy Biletski. I’m fundraising on behalf of my wonderful mother Lee-Ann Desjarlais after a tragic incident that took the life of one of her dogs and left her dog other injured.
On Friday, February 7th, 2025, at around 10:30 PM, my mother’s dogs, Moose and Ares, got out of their backyard, which backs onto Courtney Street in Regina. They were littermates, inseparable since birth in 2021. Tragically, their adventure ended in heartbreak when they were struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run on 9th Ave N. Ares succumbed to her injuries, while Moose, injured and frightened, ran from the scene.
A compassionate couple, Stephie and Shawn, witnessed the accident and immediately stopped to help Ares. While the driver sped away and other cars simply drove around her, they stayed by her side, trying desperately to save her. They tried to get her into the only 24-hour emergency vet, only to be turned away because payment was required upfront. By the time animal protection arrived, Ares had already passed. We will forever be grateful to Stephie and Shawn for comforting Ares in her final moments, keeping her warm and safe when no one else would.
Shortly after, we found Moose limping, unable to bear weight on his front leg. Unaware at the time, I called the same emergency vet that had denied Ares life-saving care, hoping they would treat Moose. Despite explaining that both dogs had been hit by a car, they refused to even see him without upfront payment—$2,580 just to begin treatment. After a long and agonizing wait, Moose was finally seen and treated overnight. At 7 AM, the vet confirmed he had multiple fractures in his front right leg, with a piece of bone protruding. He now requires surgery, with an estimated starting cost of $5,300.
My mother, who is already struggling with unimaginable grief, is also caring for five of my siblings. The cost of Moose’s treatment, combined with the expenses for Ares’ cremation and keepsakes, is an overwhelming financial burden.
I want to ease this burden for my family during this heartbreaking time. We’ve had sleepless nights trying to get my mom back home on an expensive last-minute flight so she could say goodbye to her baby, all while ensuring Moose receives the care he needs.
I’m asking for help to cover Moose’s vet bills and the cost of his much-needed surgery, which—like all his treatments—must be paid upfront and may exceed the initial estimate. Moose is not only in physical pain but also grieving the loss of his sister, his lifelong companion.
If you can help in any way even just sharing this, we would be eternally grateful. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
