My 82 year old very independent mother had a stroke in April of this year, and it's been a rough road for her ever since.  She was in the hospital for two weeks just dealing with stroke damage, then two weeks in a rehab facility, during which they gave her the wrong diet, leading to a choking anxiety that shut down oral feeding.  She came home for two weeks where I tried to be her sole caregiver, and she just kept losing weight due to the swallowing anxiety.  I had to take her back to the hospital where I decided to have a feeding tube put in, just to stabilize her nutrition.  Then after that discharge, she went to a 2nd rehab facility to continue her stroke (and now PEG tube) recovery.  After two weeks there, where I was told she had "plateaued", she came home again.  I paid private duty aides to stay with her, as my personal leave from work had been depleted.  Again, after 15 days, she had to go back to the hospital for a GI bleed, which thankfully wasn't serious, but before she could be discharged, she had a fall in her hospital room which resulted in a hip fracture.  She had repair surgery, and then went to her 3rd rehab facility on August 3rd.  She's been there ever since, but she is being discharged Sept 8 due to Medicare deciding she no longer needs daily skilled therapy.  She can't walk unassisted and has gained some limited mobility and gained some weight, but they say she doesn't need daily therapy.  I don't understand it.  She needs 24 hour supervision for assistance with activities of daily living, but my savings are almost gone, and I have no more personal time left to be her sole caregiver.    She has some small savings that can keep private duty with her at home for about two weeks, but then she'll be out of funds.  I am requesting an amount equal to private duty rates for 24-hour supervision for a 30-day period.  She has a two-story home, and I'm looking into getting a stairlift installed, but the base rate for that is $8600.  I'm so worried about her losing her ability to stay in her home due to the need for supervision.  Please help my mom stay where she feels safe and secure!
