Help Moira Get Her Home Ready for a Life-Saving Heart Transplant

My sister Moira is currently being assessed at Harefield Hospital to see if she’s a candidate for a heart transplant. As part of that process she’s currently awaiting a liver biopsy after her initial assessment , and what has become very clear is that her home won’t be safe or suitable for her to return to after surgery — and it’s already a struggle for someone living with advanced heart failure.

Moira has lived with complex congenital heart disease her whole life. She survived open-heart surgery as a baby against the odds and for many years lived independently and well. Recently a serious bout of endocarditis put her heart into decline. She’s had multiple cardiac procedures recently and now faces the added impact of liver problems caused by her heart condition.

On top of her health challenges, Moira is neurodivergent and manages health anxiety. She’s also endured heartbreaking losses: our mum (her main carer) when she was 12, and our sister to a genetic cancer, also our dad, and most recently our brother to COVID. Through it all Moira has kept fighting.

She lives alone with her beloved Jack Russell, Wolf, but due to her health she had to reduce her NHS job to two days a week working from home. On that reduced income it’s become impossible to keep up with repairs to an older property. Moira is bright, creative and independent — a lover of standing stones, history, pottery and archaeology — but she now struggles to safely leave the house on her own and needs a home that supports recovery and ongoing care.

What we want to do

- Make Moira’s home safe, accessible and low-maintenance so she can be considered for transplant and, if successful, recover safely.

- Improve her day-to-day quality of life so she can continue to work from home, manage her health, and keep Wolf with her.

- Provide practical changes (essential repairs, accessibility improvements, garden adjustments, and help with ongoing maintenance).
