Help Moe and family with medical catastrophe
Moe B. and Family Recovery Fund: Beloved Oakland Essential Worker Shot In Mid-June Remains Hospitalized, Paralyzed
As many of you already know, our beloved friends Moe and Julie are living through the aftermath of a senseless crime Moe was brutally
attacked for his wallet and phone last month, as he walked to the bus from his job at a popular grocery store near Lake Merritt. Moe was
shot, suffering contusions to both lungs and two shattered vertebrae. He is currently paralyzed from the chest down, with major trauma to the spinal cord, along with several other injuries. No suspect has been apprehended.
While Moe and the family remain hopeful in his recovery, doctors say his chances of walking again are 3% or less.
Moe is a cherished father, brother, son, uncle, nephew, friend, employee, and coworker. He risked his own health working tirelessly
throughout the entire pandemic, taking no leave or vacation time. Some of the hospital workers caring for him have recognized
Moe from their own trips to the grocery store, deeply moved by sadness of his ordeal, as well as by his strength and courage.
He and Julie, his partner for the better part of 25 years, have been unable to work since the shooting. As Moe remains hospitalized, Julie is doing her best to care for his needs as well as for their 14-year-old, who is living one of the worst nightmares imaginable for a child.
Now at an acute care rehabilitation facility, Moe is fighting hard and scheduled for release in early August, despite continuing medical
issues that are slowing the process of his rehabilitation. He will need supervision and assisted care after his release. The family now faces
many challenges including making their rental home wheelchair accessible. The supplies and equipment needed to sustain him are
numerous and costly. Social services staff is looking for more suitable housing for someone with Moe’s limitations, but as everyone in the
Bay Area knows, affordable housing for people in need is almost impossible to come by, even in the most compelling of emergency
situations. Specialized, affordable housing for disabled people is even harder to obtain.
With medical bills looming and uncertainty about future healthcare access and needs growing, the family is facing a crisis of overwhelming proportions. We who love Julie and Moe and their family, are banding together to make navigating through this trauma a little less painful with he help of funds to carry the family through the present and unknown future. Any help is profoundly appreciated.
We would also be grateful if you would share this fundraiser with your friends and family.
