I'm Juliette, and as most of you know, I’ve spent the past three summers volunteering at Mission: Wolf, a sanctuary in the Colorado mountains that rescues and cares for wolves and wolf-dogs. Most of these animals were once kept as pets and can’t survive in the wild. They’ve never learned how to hunt or live on their own, and it wouldn’t be safe for them or for other wildlife if they were released.

This experience has changed how I see the world and my place in it. I’ve lived in a tent on their land, woken up to the sound of howls, and formed rare, meaningful bonds, especially with Yden, a high-content wolf-dog and Marty, a lower-content wolf dog who reminds me so much of my own pups.

Life at the sanctuary is hard work. We feed the wolves (many are fed through a powerful and respectful “circle of life” model, where local farmers bring elderly or injured livestock to be humanely euthanized), and constantly repair enclosures to keep the animals safe. Everyone there, staff and volunteers alike, becomes like family. We each contribute in whatever way we can to keep it all going.

MIssion: Wolf has recently been able to purchase a neighboring piece of land that includes access to a fresh water well, which is essential for the wolves and for the people who care for them. This expansion, though costly, will allow Mission: Wolf access to necessary recourses so that all there resident pups can thrive.

I’ve set a goal of raising $5,000 to help support this effort.
