We are three fourth grade teachers who work in the heart of the Mission District in San Francsico seeking to take our sixty students on an multiday overnight outdoor learning adventure to the awe-inspiring Marin Headlands. The largest single expense for this field trip is accommodations and activities at the NatureBridge Golden Gate program facilitated by trained educators.
This experience will allow our 4th grade scholars to leave the urban environment of San Francisco they’re familiar and immerse themselves in a hands-on environmental science learning experience. The scientific areas of study include: marine science, terrestrial plants and animals, watershed studies, and earth and physical science. To this end, students will explore Rodeo Beach and the trails of the Marin Headlands, challenge themselves physically, build meaningful relationships and discover a caring relationship with the natural world.
Through this experience, students will experience personal growth, build interpersonal skills, gain science knowledge, strengthen critical thinking skills, and learn to act as environmental stewards. For many students it will be their first night away from home, which will support their socio-emotional growth and the development of their independence as they move towards 5th grade next year.
After our overnight field trip to NatureBridge students will remember the fun educational moments. They will have had hands-on experiences learning about environmental sciences and can share their knowledge with friends, community, and families. Students will develop joy for nature, become problem solvers, and leaders in the community.
