Meet Elliot:
Elliot is two years old. She loves reading, playing pretend, laughing with her little brother, and being outside. She lives in Crookston, MN, with her dad (Jordan), mom (Kayse), and little brother (Harrison). Elliot was born with a rare birth defect called spina bifida. Only about 1,500 children are born with spina bifida in the US each year. There are several different types, and Elliot's is called myelocystocele. Her spinal cord formed into a cyst filled with spinal fluid at the bottom during prenatal development. Because of this, Elliot is unable to walk and has a high risk of UTI. It's also quite large and can cause discomfort when sitting and lying down. She has attended physical and occupational therapy since birth, which has helped her gain the strength to crawl. She also uses a little wheelchair called a Bella's Bumba to get around. To date, Elliot has had two surgeries on her myelocystocele, but it has filled back up each time. Her parents have sought out another hospital with a spina bifida program for a second opinion. The knowledge and experience of the doctors there is incredible. This fall, Elliot will need another surgery to try to remove the softball size cyst for good. However, this hospital is in Philadelphia. As you can imagine, this comes with some financial implications. They will have to fly there and back, and mom and dad will be missing up to three weeks of work to be with Elliot during the procedure and other tests that are unavailable at home. Since the hospital is so far away, Elliot's Medicaid will not cover the medical charges or help with travel expenses (flight tickets alone are at 2k right now). Anything will help and every little bit adds up. We don't like asking for help but the next couple of months are going to be hard for our family and we realize that it's ok to ask for help when it's needed. We appreciate anything you are able to give during this time.
