Help Miso & Muenster Recover from a Tragic Attack

Yesterday, my daughter’s two beloved Australian Shepherds were viciously mauled. Our 9 month old Aussie, Miso, suffered the unimaginable; his entire tongue was ripped out, requiring immediate, life-threatening surgery. He made it through, but we’re anxiously waiting for updates to see if he will survive and if his quality of life will be viable. We’ve been told that dogs can learn to adapt without a tongue, but the first few days and weeks are critical for him to figure out how to eat and drink. It’s going to be an incredibly tough road ahead.

Miso’s older and bigger brother, Muenster, bravely tried to protect him. He was bitten on the neck and ear, locked in a dangerous grip before my daughter and her boyfriend managed to intervene. Her bf also sustained injuries, but thankfully, they weren’t as severe after receiving a tetanus shot and some hand wraps. Muenster is now home, getting all the love and care we can give him.

The surgery for Miso was $15,000, an expense we only went forward with because the vets assured us that if he survived, he could still have a good quality of life. In the coming weeks and months, we will need to purchase specialized supplies to help Miso adjust to his new way of living.

To make matters worse, the owner of the dog that attacked them is claiming it was a “service animal” and that our two Aussies somehow provoked it. Anyone who knows these sweet dogs, especially our little puppy, knows that’s not true. We are now looking into legal options, adding even more challenges to an already heartbreaking situation.

This is going to be a long, difficult, and extremely expensive journey, one that no dog owner should ever have to face. My daughter and her boyfriend, both in their early 20s, never expected their world to be turned upside down like this. We are asking for help because this is more than anyone could prepare for, emotionally and financially.
