Hello friends.

My name is Mayet. My sister Julia and I are on a quest to help our mom win the fight against cerebral cancer.

My mom Mirna, known as Goya by some of you, is an absolute trooper! She managed to raise 2 daughters and fulfil her career aspirations simultaneously. She was a very accomplished professional until she retired about 10 years ago. Most recently, she became the loving grandmother of my 3-year-old little boy, who affectionately calls her “Abu” – an abbreviation of the word Abuela, which means Grandmother in Spanish.

My mom Mirna lives by herself in Venezuela, while my sister Julia and I have been living abroad for over a decade now. This is not uncommon for Venezuelan families these days due to Venezuela’s complex economic and social situation. Due to these circumstances, businesses still operating in Venezuela have adopted the US dollar (USD) as their trading currency, making life over there very pricey for everyone, but especially for retirees.

Regardless of distance and other challenges, we are super close and have learned to sort through roadblocks such as different time zones and technology to operate efficiently as a remote family.

Earlier this year, mom started to endure unrelated signs of discomfort. The symptoms were not those that you could align to a specific illness though: one day she experienced dizziness, another day she had a fever with no apparent cause, and she also had hot flashes. Her description of the hot flashes sparked our attention, she mentioned they felt like a gust of hot air coming specifically at her head and face.

In late May, I woke up early one day to 2 missed calls from mom. I knew something was not right. I spoke with her, and she was coherent, but she had just gone through a short episode of not being able to explain herself. For a few minutes, she could not communicate her thoughts with words. She was conscious and could point stuff around, but her ability to talk was limited. Turns out, our mom Mirna started to show signs of Aphasia, a language disorder that affects how you communicate, and it is caused by damage in the area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension (John Hopkins Medicine 2024).

After a series of medical tests, we are now certain that our mom Mirna has a growing brain tumour in the left temporoparietal lobe, which is with no doubt the reason for all the symptoms she has been sustaining. This area of the brain is involved in understanding language, learning and remembering verbal information (Queensland Health 2024); lesions in this area of the brain cause deficits such as poor proprioception, impaired vision, and speech difficulties, among others (Flint Rehab 2022). Regardless of the complexity of this diagnosis, our mom is ready to fight and win the race against cancer! And for that, we need your help.

Our mom’s local health insurance ran out of funds, and with Venezuela’s public health care system plagued by widespread shortages of equipment and medicines, my sister Julia and I are now facing the need to cover all upcoming medical costs privately.

To kick-start her health journey, mom requires urgent in-hospital care, followed by a stereotactic cerebral biopsy – a highly specialised procedure performed by using advanced surgical navigation to remove brain tissue for evaluation. Once the results of the biopsy are in, she faces the imminent need for oncological/cancer treatment.

The hospital quote for the stereotactic cerebral biopsy and in-hospital care is 21,500 AUD (Australian dollars). Radiosurgery seems to be the most appropriate course of treatment, provided the tumour is too hard to reach with standard neurosurgery. Radiosurgery costs are yet to be quoted, however initial estimates signal its cost to be around 45,000 AUD. The remaining costs surely encompass specialised imaging at 750 AUD per magnetic resonance imaging session (MRI) to monitor the tumour, and 300 AUD monthly in medicines exclusively to manage her chronic hypertension. Other treatments that seem to be required include radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and is yet to be identified any other procedures, tests, medicines and health products that will be needed.

Your contribution will help Mirna get through this health crisis! My sister Julia and I have already covered all the diagnostic doctor appointments and specialised testing that uncovered mom’s brain tumour. A few weeks ago, my sister Julia travelled to Venezuela (a cost in itself) and is now leading at the forefront of my mom’s care on a full-time basis, for which she had to deprioritise work. My current role is to maintain focus on my day job and simultaneously oversee any items that can be managed remotely, such as putting together this storyline for family, friends and all kind souls out there. Without a doubt, your generosity will help us progress our mom to the next stages of treatment.

Mi nombre es Mayet. Mi hermana Julia y yo queremos lograr que nuestra madre gane la lucha contra el cáncer cerebral.

¡Mi mamá Mirna, conocida como Goya por algunos de ustedes, es una gran mujer! Logró criar 2 hijas y fue una profesional muy exitosa hasta que se jubiló hace unos 10 años. Más recientemente, se convirtió en una abuela amorosa para mi pequeño hijo de 3 años, quien cariñosamente la llama “Abu”.

Nuestra mamá Mirna vive en Venezuela, mientras que mi hermana Julia y yo vivimos en el extranjero desde hace más de una década. Esto no es extraño para las familias venezolanas hoy en día debido a la compleja situación económica y social del país. Debido al complicado contexto económico, las empresas que operan en Venezuela han adoptado el dólar estadounidense (USD) como moneda comercial, lo que hace que la vida allí sea muy costosa para todos, pero especialmente para los jubilados.

¡Independientemente de la distancia y demás desafíos, somos una familia muy unida y cercana!

A principios de este año, mamá comenzó a sufrir malestares. Sin embargo, los síntomas no eran los que se pudieran atribuir a una enfermedad específica: un día experimentó mareos, otro día tuvo fiebre sin causa aparente y también tuvo calorones. Nos llamó la atención la descripción de los calorones; nos mencionó que se sentían como una ráfaga de aire caliente que llegaba específicamente a su cara y cabeza.

Hacia finales de Mayo, un día desperté temprano y tenía 2 llamadas perdidas de mamá en mi teléfono. Supe que algo no estaba bien. Hablé con ella y aunque se expresaba de forma coherente, ella acababa de presentar un breve episodio de no poder comunicar sus pensamientos con palabras. Estaba consciente y podía señalar cosas con el dedo, pero su capacidad para hablar estuvo limitada durante unos minutos. Resulta que Mirna comenzó a mostrar signos de afasia, un trastorno del lenguaje que afecta la comunicación y es causada por daños en el área del cerebro que controla la expresión y comprensión del lenguaje (John Hopkins Medicine 2024).

Luego de una serie de exámenes médicos, ahora tenemos la certeza que mamá tiene un tumor cerebral en desarrollo, ubicado en el lóbulo temporoparietal izquierdo, lo cual sin duda es el motivo de todos los síntomas que viene presentando. Esta área del cerebro participa en la comprensión del lenguaje, el aprendizaje y el recuerdo de información verbal (Queensland Health 2024); las lesiones en esta área del cerebro provocan déficits como mala propiocepción, problemas de visión y dificultades del habla, entre otros (Flint Rehab 2022). Independientemente de la complejidad de este diagnóstico, ¡nuestra mamá está lista para luchar y ganar la carrera contra el cáncer! Y para eso necesitamos toda la ayuda possible.

El seguro médico local de nuestra mamá se quedó sin fondos, y con el sistema de salud pública de Venezuela presentando una escasez generalizada de equipos y medicamentos, mi hermana Julia y yo estamos enfrentando la necesidad de cubrir todos los costos médicos asociados a su condición.

Para empezar, nuestra mamá necesita hospitalización urgente, seguida de una biopsia cerebral estereotáxica, un procedimiento altamente especializado que se realiza mediante navegación quirúrgica avanzada para extirpar tejido cerebral, el cual debe ser evaluado. Una vez que los resultados de la biopsia estén disponibles, la necesidad de tratamiento oncológico/canceroso es inminente.

El presupuesto hospitalario para la biopsia cerebral estereotáxica y la atención hospitalaria es de 21.500 AUD (dólares australianos) equivalente a 14.500 USD. La radiocirugía parece ser el tratamiento más apropiado, ya que el tumor está ubicado en una zona de acceso riesgoso para la neurocirugía estándar. Los costos de la radiocirugía aún no se han cotizado, sin embargo, las estimaciones iniciales indican que rondará los 45.000 AUD / 30.000 USD. Los costos restantes incluyen imágenes especializadas valoradas 750 AUD / 500 USD por sesión de resonancia magnética para monitorear el tumor, y 300 AUD / 200 USD mensuales en medicamentos exclusivamente para controlar su hipertensión crónica. Otros tratamientos que parecen ser necesarios incluyen la radioterapia y la quimioterapia, y aún no se han identificado otros procedimientos, pruebas, medicamentos y productos de salud que serán necesarios.

Mi hermana Julia y yo ya hemos cubierto todas las citas médicas de diagnóstico y pruebas especializadas que descubrieron el tumor cerebral de nuestra mamá. Hace unas semanas, mi hermana Julia viajó a Venezuela (un costo de por sí) y ahora está al frente del cuidado de mi mamá a tiempo completo, razón por la cual no está trabajando en estos momentos. Mi rol es mantener la concentración en mi trabajo y, simultáneamente, encargarme de las actividades que pueden gestionarse remotamente, como escribir este resumen de eventos para el conocimiento de familiares, amigos, conocidos y todas las personas de alma caritativa que podamos alcanzar. Sin duda, tu generosidad nos ayudará a hacer avanzar a mamá a las siguientes etapas del tratamiento.
