Help Mireya Get Her Bone Marrow Transplant

Donation protected
My mother in law, Mireya, is an incredible, selfless, lively, generous and loving person. She loves and protects her family and friends fiercely and generates the same sentiment in those of us lucky enough to be in her orbit. This is one of the worst things I'll ever have to write.

The past year has been life-altering and exhausting for our family. We have tried to keep this news relatively private in order to focus on beating the monster that is cancer and protecting the environment around her. Unfortunately, the time has come for us to be a bit more open with what's happening in order to get the best possible care and every available option for a person we love so much.

In September 2021, we received devastating news - Mireya was diagnosed with (B-Cell) Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). She immediately began intense chemotherapy and completed 8 long cycles before being deemed "cancer free" this past summer. We were so relieved and cautiously optimistic that the worst was behind her in this fight.

Unfortunately, we found out in October 2022 during her monthly infusion that her cancer is back after only 3 months. She's again started the same grueling chemo regimen, but her doctors have told us that an allogeneic bone marrow transplant is critical to her survival at this stage of recurrence. Because she is uninsured, we've been told that she cannot even be tested for a match and cannot receive a transplant, which essentially means she is not being given any option here at home. Time is of the essence so we are moving on to Option B - a transplant outside of the US.

This process would involve a host of expenses including extensive travel, bone marrow testing, the transplant itself, anti-rejection medication, aftercare and sterile lodging for recovery. So many wonderful people have asked us how they can help, and honestly, this is how. If you can, please help us give her a chance at full remission - no one should be denied potentially life-saving treatment because they do not have insurance in this country.

Here's how funds will be used (into an account dedicated to medical bills):
1) Getting the bone marrow transplant
2) Paying existing medical bills that are astronomical & mounting
($25k is a random number I chose because the realistic ones would be crazy to even think about raising money for)

If you know her, you know Mireya would never ask for anything from anyone, and she will not want to do a fundraiser. While David & I agree, this has quite literally become a matter of life and death so we will do everything we can to give her the chance she deserves. Please help if you can or share if you cannot.

Thank you all as always for your love & support. It means the world.

With Love,
Amanda & David
