My 5 month old mini horse was infected with rat lungworm parasites.  He has spent 3 days in the veterinary hospital fighting for his life. He has been on anti parasitics , and intravenous medicines including antibiotics, steroids and DMSO. The result of this disease has been loss of  control of his hind end due to the neurological effects of the parasites in his spinal fluid.
Rat Lungworm Disease is a neurological disease passed by slugs that can leave a trail of slime on the grass where he grazed, and on the produce that grows here that we eat. The Big Island of Hawaii has been experiencing an increase throughout the last few years.  Dogs and People get this too.
The University of Hawaii is doing research on eradication and treatment of this. Mercury has come a long way, when several other foals have not made it. It takes a lot of resources and extensive commitment to take care of him.  He cannot get up on his own and needs assistance getting up and to be fed every 2 hours around the clock.  I am blessed to have help with this as I am now very sleep deprived after 2 weeks of this kind of supportive care. 
The vet bills have already exceeded $2,700.00 and still rising. Your help will be greatly appreciated to help us continue his necessary treatments.  Mercury is a truly Magical Mini and is responding well, so lets give him all the necessary love and support we can!
