Around August of 2018, Mimi got a simple procedure to remove her Nexplanon arm implant and to put in her Mirena IUD. The implant was affecting her menstrual cycle a little too much, so she decided to switch. The operation was done at Boston Medical Center; she was referred there by her Boston University's medical advisors. At the time of the referral, scheduling, and procedure, the advisor and the hospital all assured her that her student health insurance plan would cover the operation.
However, a few months later, she received a bill of $5500 for the operation. As it turns out, her student health insurance expired 3 days before the actual procedure. The insurance that Massachusetts General Hospital (her current employer) provides didn't apply since she started working there until two weeks after the operation.
We've tried contacting both insurance companies, held meetings with the Boston Medical center, and have been on countless phone calls trying to work this situation out. It seems that the only option left is to just cut our losses and pay the bill.
Relatively, $5500 isn't a huge medical bill, but Mimi and I are both fresh college grads, and we're living paycheck to paycheck. We're able to come up with the first $2500. However, we're still a long way from our goal, and the hospital gave us up until the end of April to make the payment before they put it to collections. Not only would that affect Mimi's credit score, which make applying for loans for medical schools more difficult, but would also affect her immigration process. These would put her future immigration visa and her re-entry into the U.S. at risk if she has to travel outside of the states.
We're not usually ones to ask for help, but we're running out of time and options. At this point, literally a donation of any amount would help us a lot. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
