Our close friend Miltiadis (Miltos) Makris, a Professor of Economics at the University of Essex, UK, needs our help.
Last July, Miltos found that he has a malignant and very aggressive brain tumor. He went through two surgeries and now needs a procedure commonly referred to as “Optune” which, unfortunately, is not covered by regular insurance and NHS in UK. Optune is an innovative, FDA-approved, treatment for glioblastoma (GBM) that works by creating Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields), which are electric fields that disrupt cancer cell division (see https://www.optune.com for details about the US version of the info site).
A specialist from the Imperial College of London, UK, Dr. Matthew Williams, who is taking care of him, strongly recommends that Miltos start the treatment as soon as possible.
The treatment is expensive (£22,100 per month) and Dr. Williams recommends a minimum of 8 months.
We decided to use the platform gofundme to raise the £176,800 Miltos needs for this treatment.
Everyone who knows Miltos knows how beautiful a person he is. He is a wonderful friend and colleague, and a fantastic economist.

PS. Miltos explored all alternative available treatments by NHS in UK, including a few that are still under clinical trials. Unfortunately, based on the type of his tumor he is not eligible for these treatments and Optune is the best option he has at the moment.
