I take care of a fully fixed feral colony that was at my house when I moved in a few years ago. I trapped and fixed 33 adults, got 25 kittens to rescues the first summer. Over time the number I feed a day has gone to about 18 give or take with some fanning out to different houses and other disappearing or passing away. My biggest challenge is when they need vet care as I cannot afford it in my own.
This week I had to put one down who had developed a tumor and could not eat, and now I have a very sick one with a terrible ( smelly) infected mouth who will see a vet in Tuesday thanks to pdx cat trapper being able to get us in. His name is Miles and I have him in a kennel in my garage waiting for Tuesday. He is super tight with Teddy who also needs a dental and is drooling. Teddy is much stronger than Miles and I’d like to get him in before he gets infected and unable to get enough to eat, as he will end up as bad as his bud Miles. It gets bad when they end up super painful and eat more slowly because they can’t compete with the others and start losing weight and getting seriously ill .
it does feel strange to ask for donations for a couple of feral cat buddies while people are not getting their food stamps and being taken away from their families , all the layoffs etc, but a couple of people have encouraged me to ask so I am.
Teddy and Miles are bonded and sleep together every night- and I hope to see them both get a few more healthy years. Raging dental infection is a painful way to live so I’ll be grateful to be able to help them.
