Friday, Kezia took Mila to an eye specialist in Albany due to vision loss. Two specialists later, she had a probable diagnosis of Ocular Melanoma with a detached retina. This is extremely rare in children.  Currently her vision is 20/400 in her right eye.
Today Mila and Kezia traveled to Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston. Mila had another eye exam, an ultrasound through her eyelids and then directly on her eyeball. The diagnosis was confirmed. She has a mid-to-large Ocular Melanoma right on top of her optic nerve. After some labs and an angiogram of the tumor, a plan was made. Now that Mila is home, her pediatrician will be ordering scans of the chest and abdomen to see if there is any metastatic disease, which unfortunately is common with this diagnosis. Mila and Kezia will return to Boston this Saturday for a preop covid screening and quarantine. Surgery will be Tuesday the 26th. Her surgeon will attach tiny metal markers to the tumor for radiation treatment. The next day they will return for a post op follow up and a consult with the Radiation Oncologist. If all goes well, they will return home on the 28th. On February 8th Mila will be back again in Massachusetts and begin 5 days of Proton Beam Radiation. There are only one of a few places in the world that does this treatment. All of these treatments are outpatient. After this treatment, Mila will be having a 6 week, 3 month, and 6 month follow up. Mila will require liver scans every 6 months for the rest of her life. Her doctor is hopeful that maybe some of her vision will return, but it's not promising.
Mila was an absolute ⭐ROCKSTAR⭐ through all of this.
With all of Mila's treatments in Massachusetts and being outpatient, there will be a lot of hotel room stays and travel expenses now and into the future.
We are asking for anyone who knows this family or hears this story to keep Mila in your thoughts and prayers. We set up this Go Fund Me to aid in collecting donations for our friend and her family but will also be accepting cash donations. If you would like to donate another way please send a message on this page.
Mila and her family thank you for the huge outpouring of love, prayers and support.
