Dear friends, family, and kind strangers,
My name is Kirstin, and I'm organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my friend Mike (known on Facebook as mikelatitude). Mike is a vibrant, adventurous soul who has always brought joy to those around him. But on December 3, 2025, his life changed in an instant when a tragic fire broke out in his apartment in Utila, Honduras. The flames engulfed his home, and Mike suffered severe 2nd-degree burns on his legs. In the chaos, he was unable to escape quickly, leaving him in excruciating pain and completely unable to walk.
Local medical services couldn't provide the specialized care he needed, so Mike was urgently transported to the public hospital in La Ceiba. There, he's already undergone several surgeries to treat his burns and prevent infection. The doctors and nurses have been incredible, but his condition requires more advanced intervention. Now, the medical team has determined that he needs a critical follow-up surgery that can only be performed in the capital city of Tegucigalpa (often called Tegus). This procedure is essential to restore mobility to his legs and give him a chance at a full recovery—but it's incredibly expensive, far beyond what Mike or his support network can afford on our own.
We've reached out to the U.S. Embassy for assistance, as Mike is a U.S. citizen, but unfortunately, they've denied help, leaving us with no other options. Mike has no insurance coverage for this, and in Honduras, public healthcare can only go so far for complex cases like this. Without this surgery, Mike faces a future of chronic pain, immobility, and potential complications that could change his life forever. He's a fighter—he's already pushed through so much—but he can't do this alone.
That's where you come in. Your generous donations will directly fund:
- The surgery in Tegucigalpa (estimated at $12,000–$15,000, including specialist fees and hospital stay).
- Transportation and lodging for the trip (about $1,000, as it's a 6+ hour journey from La Ceiba).
- Post-surgery rehabilitation, medications, and follow-up care ($3,000–$4,000 to ensure he can walk again and regain independence).
- Any remaining funds will go toward replacing essentials lost in the fire, like clothing and basic living needs during recovery.
Every dollar counts and brings Mike one step closer to healing. Imagine the relief of knowing he can stand on his own two feet again, return to the activities he loves, and rebuild his life. Mike has always been there for others—now it's our turn to be there for him.
Please donate what you can, share this campaign widely, and keep Mike in your thoughts. We'll post regular updates with photos and progress reports to show how your support is making a difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your compassion and generosity.
Cash donations being accepted at Quest Utila.
With gratitude,
Kirstin
