Hey everyone,
This is a last resort and it is not something he wanted to do but we have exhausted all our options. Here is the story of what’s happened and why we are so in need of help.
As most of you know my Dad, Mike, has a partially paralyzed right arm since 2004. This has never stopped him from working to the bone and being on his tools. On September 14th 2021 he fell and broke the humorous in the same arm which resulted in needing surgery. He went on September 20th to schedule surgery and came back positive for Covid so the surgery was postponed.
Over the course of the following days he got sicker and eventually was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Ville Platte, LA on September 23,2021 due to acute respiratory failure in result of Covid/Pneumonia. He was extremely sedated throughout most of his 3 month hospital stay. The following Friday while in this hospital I noticed his left foot was pale and cold and the staff seemed careless. The doctor never came in to look until the following morning which was well over 18 hours from when he lost blood flow. It was a major lack of urgency. He was completely neglected at that hospital the entire time. Didn’t matter how hard My sister or I fought and pleaded for better care they never listened. From there he was transferred to Baton Rouge to try to save his leg. All while on the bipap machine to help him breath because he could no longer do so on his own. When we got to Baton Rouge they were able to break up the clot but by then it was too late they could not gain blood flow back. Because of the current condition of his lungs. We had no idea if he was going to make it so they didn’t go in immediately for the amputation. A few days after being in Baton Rouge his lungs were shutting down and we had no choice but for them to intubate him. From there the doctors said the chance of him coming off alive is 10%. (And by god he beat that statistic!!)
Well…While in the medically induced coma on October 18th his leg became too necrotic and they had to amputate his left leg above the knee regardless!
He made it through thank god!
A week later they started to lighten his sedation and he woke up without a leg. Not knowing what’s going on. Eventually he woke up enough and they went ahead and performed a tracheotomy for long term vent treatment.
A couple days later in November 8th I believe he was transferred back to Texas finally to an Long term care facility where he learned to talk, feed himself, and gain more strength back they also removed the trach at this facility and from there transferred him to a Rehabilitation center for a couple weeks so that he can learn to do more on his own.
He is finally home after beating death once more!
He still has an extremely long road ahead and still needs surgery on his broken arm and still currently on oxygen.
We are currently waiting on his prosthetic due to insurance issues.
He is still building strength but has become much more independent and getting back to his normal self. However I have had to step away from my job to care for him so we are down two incomes at the moment for the past almost 4 months. We have stayed on top of things hanging by a thread the past couple months but it is finally starting to catch up to us. These are the following things we need help with until we can Atleast get him approved for disability:
*Ortho
*Prosthetic Specialist
*and more to come
Anything at all is appreciated! He has struggled so much already and we need him to continue to focus on his recovery and health and not worry about these things.
I wanted to plan a benefit but I found out I am pregnant with twins and am extremely high risk and supposed to be in bed so the stress and activity that comes with benefit planning is not something I can do at this moment in time.
All funds will go directly to his account!
And to everyone who donated to help keep us in Louisiana by his side through the whole experience to advocate for him and make these hospitals fight for him! Thank you! You guys saved his life! Had we not been there with him he wouldn’t have made it!
