Our brother Mike is in need of our help. He is currently recovering from a 6 hour long brain surgery.
About 3 weeks ago, (February 2021), after a 2 month long furlough, Mike returned to work as a chef in San Diego, CA . After about 2 hours into his shift he suddenly had a seizure. The paramedics rushed him to the ER where the doctors took an MRI and found a baseball-sized tumor in the frontal lobe of his brain. The very next morning they performed surgery on him and successfully removed the large growth. The neurologist, just from looking at it, said there was a good chance it was the dreaded Cancer. Biopsy was sent out to pathology and the waiting began.
After 4 days, He was released from Scripps Mercy Hospital and sent home to be with his family. After a week of waiting ,he received the wonderful news that its not cancer! It was later determined that Mike is actually suffering from a very rare disease called Primary CNS Vasculitis (Necrotizing Vasculitis). Its an auto-immune disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessel walls-in Mike's case-in his brain.
Because it is so rare, the rheumatologists have to put Mike through a lot of tests to better determine the proper treatments. In the next 6 months he will be scanned, tested, and punctured (even a spinal tap). He will be on countless medications including steroids, anti-seizure meds , antibiotics, and preventative bone loss meds just to name a few.
To hopefully eradicate it for good, the rheumatologists suggested chemo for 3 months, which he will start very soon. After the three months he will then take immunosuppressants for another 2 years, and possibly anti seizure medication for the rest of his life.
He began his recovery without the ability to speak very well-maybe one or two words at a time. As of today, he is doing very well with the help of his speech therapist who he sees twice a week. Needless to say he will not be able to work any time soon.
Mike is a brother, son, friend, artist, chef, musician, skater, and has a heart of pure gold!
We have started this Go Fund Me account to ease the burden on Mike. In the next coming months, he will need to be at countless doctor's appointments for special testing and chemo therapy, etc. As you can imagine, the normal costs of every day life...such as rent, food, gas, car, and the medical costs....can be astronomical.
This will allow Mike and his family to concentrate on Mike getting well and fighting this horrible disease.
From the bottom of our hearts we humbly ask that you share this link with friends and family and if possible, in giving ( any amount will help).
We thank each and every one of you for your support. God Bless!
