Help Mike & Jasmine Stay Afloat During Long COVID Recovery
Donation protected
Hi, I’m Jasmine and while I’m extremely embarrassed to be asking for help, the truth is, I’m at the end of what I can carry on my own.
In July 2022, Mike contracted COVID-19. What we thought would be a tough few weeks turned into a life-altering journey neither of us could have predicted. The virus left Mike temporarily paralyzed on his left side, and while some mobility returned, the long-term effects have continued to take a major toll on his body and our lives.
Mike now lives with severe Long COVID symptoms which include neurological damage, daily nerve pain, extreme fatigue, and episodes of brain fog so intense that some days it feels similar to dementia. He becomes disoriented, confused, and struggles to recognize what’s going on around him. It’s heartbreaking to witness, and it makes even the simplest parts of daily life deeply unpredictable. One of the most debilitating symptoms is post-exertional malaise, even light activity like walking the dogs for 20 minutes can leave him bedridden for days.
He walks with a cane, is on high doses of pain medication, and is no longer able to work like he once could. We’ve seen many specialists, but because this illness is still so new, even the experts are often at a loss. There is no clear treatment plan, only symptom management and regular monitoring to ensure he doesn’t get worse. Sadly, despite our best efforts, he has recently gotten worse.
While he’s technically covered under WorkSafe and disability insurance, the process has been anything but smooth. For over four months, we received no income from his employer or support agencies, and even now - three years later - his payments are inconsistent and far lower than what he once earned.
We also have to regularly travel out of town for medical appointments and specialist consults, which adds more costs to an already heavy burden.
Like many families, we made big life decisions before illness changed everything. We’re grateful for those moments but now we’re facing a reality we never saw coming, and we’re doing our best to adapt and survive with grace.
During that time, we’ve exhausted our savings and dipped into what was meant to be our wedding fund to survive. I’ve taken on full financial responsibility, running my small business while also picking up hospital shifts and caring for Mike. It’s been a stretch beyond words.
We’ve hesitated to ask for help because we know so many people are struggling too but the truth is, even small contributions can help us stay afloat during this chapter. Every dollar helps cover essential bills, medical travel, and gives us just a bit more breathing room while we navigate the unknown.
We’re not looking for handouts, just a little relief while we catch our breath. And when we are in a place to give again, we absolutely will. We already work with two local charities and plan to pay forward any generosity we receive now when we’re back on our feet.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for reading, for caring, and for sharing if you can. Your support means more than we can express.
With love and gratitude,
Jasmine & Mike
