On May 13th, my father Mike and stepmother Judy lost their home near Kazabazua, Quebec, after a devastating fire\. They made it out safely, but their home and most of what they had built over their lives were gone\.
They had no house insurance\.
When I first started this GoFundMe, we were trying to help them survive the immediate aftermath — somewhere to stay, basic necessities and figuring out what on earth came next\.
A lot has happened since then\.
**We decided to build them a home\.**
Not a big or fancy house\. A small 28’ × 28’ home designed to give Dad and Judy a safe, accessible place to live and allow them to stay on their property\.
And somehow, with an unbelievable amount of help, we are actually doing it\.
Family, friends, neighbours, businesses and complete strangers have donated money, materials, time and labour\. We have searched Marketplace for used materials and fixtures\. We have accepted donations wherever possible\. We have learned jobs we never expected to learn and spent our weekends framing, roofing, insulating, hauling materials and doing every part of this build that we can safely and legally do ourselves\.
**The photos on this page show what that help has accomplished\.**
The house is standing\. The windows and exterior doors are in\. The steel roof and soffit are complete\. The house has been insulated\. Electrical work is underway\. We have been able to collect many of the appliances, fixtures and materials they will eventually need\.
But I need to be very clear about something:
**We are not finished, and we still need help\.**
In some ways, we have reached one of the hardest financial stages of the build\.
There are jobs we simply cannot do ourselves\. Electrical and plumbing must be completed properly by professionals\. We still have plumbing work, vapour barrier, interior finishing, fixtures and other materials and costs ahead of us before this building can actually become their home\.
We have stretched every dollar as far as we possibly can through donated labour, donated materials, second\-hand purchases and doing the physical work ourselves\.
But there are some expenses we simply cannot volunteer our way around\.
And now we are racing the calendar\.
**Winter is coming in Quebec, and our goal is to get Mike and Judy into their home before it does\.**
That matters even more because Judy is dealing with significant mobility challenges and joint surgeries\. This little house is being built with accessibility in mind so she can live more safely and independently\.
If you’re seeing this fundraiser for the first time, please know that your donation isn’t disappearing into an idea or a distant plan\.
**You can actually see what people have already helped build\.**
Every donation gets us closer to plumbing that works, walls that can be finished, a functioning bathroom and kitchen, heat, and ultimately a front door that Mike and Judy can close behind them and finally say:
**We’re home\.**
If you can donate $10, $25, $50, $100 or whatever is comfortable for you, it truly adds up\.
And if donating isn’t possible, you can still help us enormously\.
**Please share this fundraiser\.**
We have been incredibly fortunate to have support from people who know us\. Now we need help reaching people we don’t know — people outside our immediate circle who might see this story and decide they want to help us finish what this community started\.
To everyone who has donated money, materials, labour, meals, equipment, transportation, advice or simply shown up when we needed another pair of hands: thank you\.
You have helped turn the site of one of the worst days of Mike and Judy’s lives into the beginnings of their new home\.
**We’ve come too far to stop now\. Help us get Mike and Judy home before winter\.**
