Help Mike and Dani Rebuild After Hurricanes

I'm Tricia Goyer, a friend (and Optavia Coach of Dani Pettrey). I have known Dani for a decade, as we are both writers and publish books in the Christian publishing genre.

In September, Mike and Dani Pettrey moved to New Port Richey, Florida, excited for a fresh start in their new home closer to kids and grandkids. Shortly after getting there, they faced a mandatory evacuation as Hurricane Helene approached. Unpacked boxes still filled their home when they left. When Mike returned to check on their house, they found 2-4 feet of water flooding every room. Nearly 95% of their belongings were destroyed, including both of their cars, which are now a total loss.

Mike and Dani are now facing the difficult task of rebuilding their lives from the ground up. They must replace their cars, clothes, furniture, and more. Beyond the material loss, they lost precious memories—photos and keepsakes that can never be replaced.

Dani is a new Optavia coach known for her caring and giving heart. She had just started a 14-day Detox group for writers (on September 16), helping others on their wellness journeys when the hurricanes struck. Her focus quickly shifted to caring for her family during the chaos as they navigated insurance claims, water mitigation, and finding temporary shelter.

Their insurance requires them to cover the high deductible and pay out of pocket for the water mitigation and contractor. They had a high deductible, so they will only be partially reimbursed later. The process is slow, leaving them to bear the financial burden upfront.

Mike and Dani found temporary shelter in an Airbnb, but Hurricane Milton hit, leaving their Airbnb without power. Now, they’ve had to move into hotels with their adult children and grandkids, who are also without power. Unfortunately, their insurance doesn't cover the costs of Airbnb, dining out, and hotel stays, adding to their financial strain.
